The college search process
For most of us, the idea of finding the perfect university for our child is like finding the Holy Grail. The possibilities seem endless, the costs prohibitive. They are, and...they are. But with a little effort, there will be "the right" college for your child too! OK, you say- we have 4 years. Plenty of time. Words from the now wiser. Start now. Make lists. Ask questions. Read, read, read. Where and when do I begin? Actually, this should read, where and when should (insert son/daughter's name) begin! When does the college search process begin? That really is a personal choice. However, with that said, I say start at the beginning of High School. Where does one begin the college search? * Older siblings, cousins, neighbors friends: From them you will get the "inside" scoop. * School counselor: They have books, brochures, lists of colleges visiting the school and or area. * The library: Depending on the size of your town, they usually have a great selection of titles. * The bookstore: I like to pick up books and look inside. The bookstore has the newest releases. * The internet: There are thousands of sites out there to help with your process. Gather all of your information and make a plan for research. Here is a chance to get inside your child's head. Find out the basics, do they want to be close to home or on the other side of the world? Do they want to go to a huge university or a small intimate college? Are they sorority material or technological marvels? A pattern should emerge that will help narrow the choices. Remember that your child's interests will change the further they get into their high school experience. Be flexible and remember it is them going to college, not you. Be patient, and good luck. |
